Having summarised the information provided by the participants from all regions of Latvia, we are happy to announce that this year about 150,000 people participated in the Big Cleanup, which is 40,000 more than last year. We are satisfied and proud that the number of people who care about tidiness and beauty of their environment keeps growing. Overall, about 3,500 t of waste were delivered to the landfills in the Cleanup events across Latvia.

Hundreds of Thousands of People to Take Part in Great Cleanup Saturday, April 24

The 3rd annual Great Cleanup project is kicking off in Latvia this Saturday, April 24. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to take part in the voluntary campaign. This year the theme is culture. Activists will be asked to clean up and improve places that are of historical and cultural importance.

The organisers of the Big Cleanup use eco-friendly car

Thanks to the support of SIA Latvija Statoil and AAS Balta, the organisers of the Big Cleanup use a special green car for their organisational travels. It runs on E85 bioethanol and thus emits 50% less CO2.

No natural resources tax on sorted waste collected during the Big Cleanup – positive experience of Tukums Region

Although this year the landfills yet again will be accepting the waste collected during the Big Cleanup free of charge, the local governments will still have to pay the natural resources tax on waste disposal and VAT. The natural resources tax is 3 LVL for 1 ton of waste plus 21% VAT.
